Zack Smithey Fine Art Sculptures — Companions of Comfort
At SSM Children’s Hospital, artist Zack Smithey designed and created three vibrant dog sculptures that serve as both playful art and a source of comfort.
Positioned at the base of a slide in the hospital’s open atrium, the sculptures provide a joyful landing point for children while anchoring the space with color, warmth, and personality.
Surrounded by expansive windows that flood the area with natural light, the dogs stand as cheerful companions in an environment that can often feel overwhelming, where children and families may face difficult diagnoses, long treatments, and moments of uncertainty. Through their approachable forms, playful spirit, and expressive use of color, the sculptures bring laughter, peace, and a sense of care into the hospital experience.
