- What appears to be simple solid black and white stripes is an illusion. Each stripe alternates, fading from black to white and white to black. Twain's outline is only on the dark side of each stripe, every other stripe on each side of the silhouette. In the middle where the fades become grey together, the image is blurry because contrast is minimized. On the left and right contrast is maximized.
